“ The mind plays its role in human development, but this role is limited and can lead only to a certain level; beyond it, a new journey begins.” Bhagavan Ramana Maharishi
“To speak, and to write, is to assert who we are, what we think. The necessary other side is to surrender these things — to stand humbled and stunned and silent before the wild and inexplicable beauties and mysteries of being.” Jane Hirshfield
On earth, too, the profound beauty and complex harmony of the web of life seem to indicate an underlying power that is wise, compassionate and miraculous. This power created all the species of life from microbes to plants and reptiles and sea-creatures and birds and beasts, a wondrous evolutionary spiral culminating in homo sapiens, the human race.
Despite the tremendous promise and potential of a self-aware, intelligent species, something went terribly wrong: within a few short centuries, this single species has propogated all over the planet and, like a cancer, wreaked brutal damage on its delicately balanced ecology. Fatally flawed systems and cultures have led to a destructive and unsustainable way of life. This rapacious, suicidal and undoubtedly insane race now stands on the verge of destroying itself, all its fellow living beings and its only home.
Where did it all go wrong ? Why did that perfect intelligence, that divine creative power, allow such a tragedy to come to pass? Is it all part of some arcane master-plan ?
It is impossible to answer these questions satisfactorily in the realm of the intellect, of conceptual thought and language, of logic and theories of cause-and-effect.
Today, in 2020, a tiny virus has brought the whole world to a standstill. Within a few short months, life on earth has been drastically altered. Suffering, death, global economic collapse, …so many dark clouds seem to loom on the horizon. Who knows where this will lead?
Yet perhaps there is still some hope for the human race : throughout history, certain individuals have evolved into a higher state of consciousness, escaped the trap of mind and grown into the boundless perfection of pure being. These blessed enlightened ones – prophets, mystics, sages, saints - have always done their compassionate best to share wisdom and understanding with all who would listen. Unfortunately, their teachings were not easy to understand and were unheeded - or worse, misinterpreted- by most.
Those humans who, through suffering, surrender, introspection or grace, have somehow managed to escape the dark shadow of the ego-mind complex and abide peacefully in their own self-nature are the fortunate few. They understand perfectly the divine unity that underlies all creation. Such an understanding, if shared by most humans, would lead to a total transformation of our civilisation. The good news is that these numbers are increasing: more and more human beings are approaching this enlightened dimension of consciousness.
Have faith : the design remains flawless – everything happens as it is meant to happen!
Once such individuals increase sufficiently in number and attain a critical mass, a total metamorphosis of the collective human consciousness may at last herald a new dawn - for the long suffering planet and all its living species, for all of life.
Perhaps the kingdom of heaven will finally blossom on earth, as it was always meant to.
The alternative is mass extinction.
