It's Time

“Turn your attention inwards and  discover that the whole world is full of Supreme Spirit.”
“A Self-realised being cannot but help benefiting the world. His very existence is the highest good.”
Talks , Sri Ramana Maharishi.

It’s time.
It’s time to return to the source, to let the mind sink in the Heart and see!
It’s time to taste the ecstatic bliss of your own true nature, to know and be the vast and perfect Love that is the source and the substance of all things.
It’s time to awaken, to dispel the illusion, to be the Light Divine that you were always meant to be.

It’s time, dear one, to shine through the fog of  fear and doubt and sadness, to dance with joy and celebrate the wondrous perfection of it all!
It’s time to expand beyond all limitations and boundaries and merge in the immortal, infinite Self.
It’s time to experience that ultimate, transcendental peace that is the very ground of being.

Just be still, be present, be here:
This is enough.
I wish you a magical  New Year!

Sacred River

Photos : Kanchana Sunderrajan

You stand on the boat of life:
Death burns always in the background -
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
On the ghats of Benares, bodies burn in endless  succession;
Are you the body? Or are you spirit?
When the body is burnt, who will you be?
Find out now-while you still live!
Through the window of  Self -Knowledge,
seek the answer deep within:
Learn how to be
The sacred river flowing so gladly home to the sea.

Your Gift

Sweet Lord!
Your radiance burns away the fog of my mind;
Now, like a fruit on a tree, I ripen slowly in the warmth of your grace.
One sip of your wine has intoxicated me forever
as your true nature blossoms in the lotus of the Heart.
Dissolved in you, I  become timeless, infinite  space.
Freed of form, I am cleansed of all karma and sin;
The whole universe is now my home and all living creatures, my kin.
You swallowed me in your fiery embrace until I ceased to be;
I merged with you like a river running home to the sea.
This radiant Self ,unchanging and infinite, is perfect peace and bliss.
How can I begin to thank you, O gracious Lord, for such a gift as this?

Nothing but God

“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” C.G.Jung

Despite all the pleasures and achievements of this world, the human pursuit of happiness is never fulfilled; there is always an inherent memory that true joy lies only in God.
With  a fierce and ancient longing , across all the lifetimes, this human heart yearns to love and embrace God.
In the distant stars scattered like jewels across the night sky, these human eyes try to see God.
In the secret melodies of wind and rain and sea, these human ears try to hear God’s voice.
In theories and philosophies and complex concepts, this human intellect strains to understand God.
Until at last, beaten down by suffering and despair, the human being totally surrenders to the merciful grace of God.
The individual seeks within, dives and dissolves in the deepest core of self .
This is the holy grail, the fountain of immortality, the ocean of  everlasting bliss.
The human  awakens to his own infinite Being.
God becomes God.
Thus dawns the revelation: there is, was and always will be nothing but God!

All struggle, all effort, all suffering ends.

God is a Poet

( Celebrating 250th  Anniversary of Tuesdays with the Bard at Urban Solace Cafe ,B'lore )

They say poets bleed more than other men- I cannot say if this be true;
I know only that the tangled metaphors of love and desperation
Can drive tormented hearts to cry out in primordial rhyme
As sad and as ancient as the very birth-pangs of Time.

A solitary blue-robed Madonna afloat on a  troubled sea
May remind us of  the hidden depths of implacable destiny.
Our laments are of lost causes or  distant memories  of the dead,
Like  the echo  between star-crossed lovers of all the words left unsaid.

A long-forgotten bard may whisper a fragile truth across the years,
Of life’s desolate ironies and deep inherited fears.
For poetry can touch all hearts, play upon inner strings,
A sacred chord that reverberates in the sound of all beginnings.

We could sing of joy too: of sudden, sunny mornings  dissolving the mist
Of winter’s cold grey tresses-  unexpected radiance, ephemeral bliss.
Or of the secret, hidden treasure in each soul , that seed divine,
Effecting miraculous transformations of the mundane into the sublime.

True poetry arises from the depths of silence in a humbled heart
Seeking solace in stillness and in surrender’s  graceful art.
This house of form is always changing- few know the indwelling Light,
Ever changeless, formless, eternal,  this is the endless delight.

God must surely be a poet for he sings in every tree ,
All life  joins in  the chorus of this divine harmony.
The wind across the water ,the stars bright in the sky,
All sing the story of the glory of the One infinite “I”.

This Silence

" The Guru's silence is more vast and emphatic than all the sastras ." Bhagawan Sri Ramana Maharishi

In the lotus of the Heart, this silence shines as a steady, smokeless flame.
It throbs like a drumbeat, vibrates like thunder, shatters the delusion of ignorance forever.
Once you have known this, perception will never be the same.
This is the effulgent, divine wholeness that contains all that exists.

Everything dissolves in this vast , impeccable stillness – here is the One where no others remain.
Infinite, eternal, omnipotent, this silence is the source of all joy.
One glance of the Guru drove me deep into this silence; now I have lost my mind and forgotten my name.

Like the addict pursues the tears of the poppy, I pursue this silence;
One taste is enough to know that this is all that there ever is.
This silence is source and goal, Shiva and Shakti, Guru and Grace.
Like an arrow unerringly driven into the heart, I am hurled into this .
This  silence is the ecstatic perfection of  immaculate peace.
It is the song of truth, the light of awareness, the endless ocean of bliss.

The Mad Rush

Where are you rushing to in such a hurry?
You know this life is short, yet you hurtle on the highway of destiny to a certain death.
When you  know beyond doubt that all attainment, all achievement, all possessions and attachments are but dust, what is the point of all your frantic efforts ?
This blind pursuit of fulfilment is folly! Slow down!

Being is real – becoming is fantasy.
Infinity and eternity are right here and right now!
There is nothing to do: life flows by itself.
What needs to be done will get done.
Every heartbeat, every  breath you take bears witness to this.
If you would know true happiness, be still and discover Grace.
Like a dry leaf blown by a hurricane, the wind of Grace drives you inwards to the Self;
Like driftwood caught in a whirlpool, the current of Grace sweeps you deep within to the Self;
Like a moth drawn to a flame, the fire of Grace draws you in and melts you in the Self.
Nothing more needs to be done.
Rest as the Self - in perfect, blissful peace!

The Source of All Blessings

When you surrender, with total love and devotion,
The Master’s command, “Be still!”
Dissolves thought and word, body and mind, God and world,
Like the last trumpet call at the end of all things.
Here, all your stories end- everything disappears in an infinite sky of bliss.
In the heart of being, in unmoving silence,
The luminous perfection of the Self
Shines with the glory of a thousand suns.
Firmer than a mountain, vaster than space,
More liquid than water, more radiant than fire,
This is the unveiling of  the mystery of Brahman,
The source of all potential and all power.
This is the end of  craving, the extinction of fear,
The ecstatic peace that is beyond all understanding.
Abide quietly in this stillness: this is enough.
From this, all blessings flow.

My True Home

Diving deep
In search of myself,
I  found that secret cave
at the innermost heart of being
Where a forgiving, compassionate sky stretches out to infinity.
Sun and moon are wedded here, as are all the stars;
This is the perfect whole that is the One
Whose nature is grace-consciousness-love.
This is my true home where I will stay forever.
This empty fullness
pervaded by the ecstatic fragrance of the Real
is where I disappear.
            All  that exists
            dissolves here-now
in this timeless ocean of bliss.

Three Dreams

“The Sage who abides as his true nature, awakens from all the three dreams:  the deep sleep, dream and waking states.” Srimad Bhagavatham

Every human being experiences the three states of waking, dreaming and deep sleep- they come and go and come again.
In deep sleep, there is no body, no mind, no world - only emptiness and rest.
When the mind stirs in sleep, the dream state appears: to the dreamer, whatever fantastic images and happenings he sees seem very real- until he awakes.
Upon awakening, he instantly cognises that all that he experienced in this dream state was unreal, an illusion, just a movie in the mind.
In the waking state , he is convinced that all he experiences is reality; even though it will all disappear once again in sleep. Now he is trapped in samsara, endlessly driven by desires and fears, thoughts and feelings, lost in misery.
Driven by dis-satisfaction and a primordial craving for true happiness, he looks for salvation and finds the sage, the Guru. Following the advice of the Guru, he dives deep into his own being, seeking the source of his own ego.
He learns stillness, silence, freedom from mind.
At last, by the grace of the Guru, he finally discovers his true nature, the state of waking sleep, the formless, infinite, one Self.
This is the supreme, blissful and peaceful state of the sage, transcending name and form, birth and death.
Just as we all experience awakening from the dream, he now experiences the Reality beyond all the three states; he realises that even the seeming reality of the waking state was as much an illusion as the dream.
He has sacrificed his mind in the fire of jnana and become Brahman, the one true Self that is infinite, eternal, unchanging.
Now, with the Infinite Eye, he sees only the Self everywhere, in all things and creatures and places.
Like a river flows into the ocean, he merges with the Divine.
Now he is Awake.

This Love

“The experience of Self, which is nothing but the form of supreme love, is that in which the eyes see only love, the tongue tastes only love and the touch feels only love, which is bliss.
Bhagawan  Ramana Maharishi, Guru Vachaka Kovai

This love has no limits, no borders or boundaries, no conditions or causes.
Vaster than the universe, it is a flame that devours all that exists and burns bright for all eternity.
This love needs no reasons, cannot be described or explained, is beyond all conceptual thought.
Once you have tasted this , nothing else will ever satisfy you !

Intoxicated with this love, I wander like a madman across the worlds,
Seeking for traces of my Beloved, driven by unending bliss.
Like a tiger hunting his prey, I follow the divine spoor deep into the heart of being;
the hunt is the dance, the seeking is the finding, this is the endless ecstasy!

This love has swallowed me whole, ground me into powder, burnt all that is me into ashes.
But still, like a drunkard thirsts for wine, I thirst for the Beloved:
This is my reason for existing, my source and my goal, my beginning and end.
Listen! I will tell you my secret: this love is my prayer and my dance, my joy and my celebration.

My Beloved and I are always One in infinite, blissful peace!

The Ballad of the Timeless Cafe

" a humble tribute to Koshy's, the iconic restaurant in Bangalore that so many generations have loved."

This is the tale of an old café,
A place where Time stands still,
And you can dawdle over coffee
Without being presented a bill.
Serving food and drink to everyone
For over sixty  years -
Chicken patties and chutney sandwiches
Or rums and vodkas and beers.

Now there be ghosts in the woodwork here
Who could tell you many a story
Of plots hatched and lovers matched,
Of scandals , laughter and glory.
Bold adventures, rainbow myths  and dreams
Were spun out of the sugar and spice
Of  tea and cofee and  cutlets and cake
Or papads, curry and rice.

Some first came here as tiny tots,
Each given a special high chair,
In the peaceful days of long ago
When folks loved  traditional fare.
Sunday morning appams and stew
Or bacon and eggs and toast
Long drawn convivial lunches ,
Fish ‘n chips for the hungry host.

Now the tang of fresh morning coffee
Draws many a regular guest-
Lawyers taking a break from court
For conversation and jest.
The students, artists, businessmen,
Stoic, toiling writers too,
The mooning couples lost in their dreams,
The disciples and their guru.

They all flock to the familiar cafe
Where they can find some cheer,
Or entertainment or camaraderie,
Long conversations over beer.
In a world going mad with rapid change,
These old walls bring some calm
The very sameness of the place
Acts as a magical balm.

The waiters in their ancient white,
The solid silverware,
The faded pictures on the walls,
The history in the air -
All these make up the timeless café
Where all things stay the same,
As generations come and go,
Playing the human game.

There’s the table of the old men.
There’s the table of the young,
The little table against the wall
Where a famous song was sung.
There’s a table by the window,
Where dreamers sit and stare
And the tables in the corner -
Lovers’ secrets to share.

A table for the madmen
and a table for the wise
And a table by the pillar
For some special exercise.
Let the world go to perdition
We care not in the least:
Come now all ye faithful
And join us at the feast!

For here we gather together
In an eternal dream
Eating our caramel custard
And our fruit salad and cream.
Creating with our voices
The din of timeless lore,
Unravelling like frothy waves
Upon some primeval shore.

Waiters glide by silently
With trays of food and drink.
Familiar strangers greet each other
With smile or nod or wink.
Some may seek good fortune,
Some may seek out fame,
But every heart here treasures
The comfort of the same.

Here  old men speak of politics
And of the days gone by,
The children scream and run about,
The patient parents sigh.
The nabob is measured for a suit,
A fight breaks out somewhere,
As booming voices echo
Through the gossip-laden air.

Unperturbed, the yogis levitate,
Borne on the coffee smoke,
Speaking of alien mysteries,
Of the wisdom of the joke.
Forget your worries and your strife -
The coffee’s freshly brewed
The raucous youth with his rum and coke
Is merely pleasantly stewed.

Two pretty girls cause heads to turn,
They pointedly ignore
The boorish stares and fading airs
Of some aged Lothario.
The waiters laugh in secret,
They have nicknames for all
And they mutter to each other
As they lean against the wall.

Days bright hum fades to evening’s fun,
The night grows merry and gay
Cacophony is the anthem
At the old timeless café.
Abandon fear, ye who enter here,
This dimension’s beyond Time.
Here there is only the endless story
And the never-fading rhyme.

Prayer to Devi

You are the beginning and the end of everything.
You are the consciousness that creates all that exists, the energy that pervades every atom, the void that devours all the universes.
You are form and formless, birth and death, source and goal.
O Devi! Let me worship at your feet.

You are loving mother, omnipotent goddess, ferocious destroyer of evil, serpent lightning  exploding up the spine.
You are the giver and the taker, the light and the darkness, the sun and the storm.
You are knowledge and wisdom, the source of all skill, the origin of all that is.
O Devi! Bless me with your sweet grace.

You are the cause of all causes, the divine enchantress, the exquisite perfection of Being.
You are spell-binding beauty and transcendent grace, girl, woman and crone , the fearsome wielder of the sword of Time.
You are feminine power, enchanting perfection, infinite love, ecstatic bliss!
O Devi! Fill my heart with your Light.

May your blessings heal , protect  and enlighten us all.

Waking Up From The Dream

“You are of the nature of the simplest of the simple. You are of the nature of the supremely majestic.
You are of the nature of the holiest of the holy. You are of the nature that has no higher or lower state.
You are of the nature of Awareness that is endless. You are of the nature that cannot be comprehended.
You are of a rare nature that is indescribable. You are of the nature of Truth-Consciousness-Bliss.”
Ribhu Gita. 2:24

Oh child of man!
You, who are the God of Gods, who are infinite, eternal, conscious, blissful perfection,
how did you lose your way?
Forgetting your true nature, you fell into a bag of tricks, a magician’s spell, a lotus eater’s hallucination!
You who are the pure, timeless ,deathless seed of seeds; one moment of distraction and you seem to have exploded into a forest of concepts and thoughts and endless reflections of worlds within worlds!
Trapped behind the looking-glass mind , you got lost in the endless movie of birth and death and rebirth, the time-space matrix of quantum illusion.
For untold ages, you wandered through different worlds, heavens and hells, desperately seeking that final satisfaction, that closure, that peace.
The truth is: you were never lost, you just forgot your own nature.
Awaken from the nightmare- it’s only a dream.
Remember your true nature: return to your true home.
Drop all concepts, all thoughts, all fantasies!
Plunge within into the depths of silence.
All illusion is blown away without a trace.
Perfection blossoms in that stillness.
All that remains is the immaculate glory of Being.

Abiding Joy

“The Self is the source of abiding joy. Our hearts are filled with joy in seeing him enshrined in the depths of our consciousness. If he were not there, who would breathe, who live? He it is who fills every heart with joy.” The Taittiriya Upanishad.

Every human being wants to find true and lasting joy, because this is the very core of being.
Who sees with your eyes, hears with your ears, thinks with your mind, feels with your heart?
The Self is the foundation of all that exists.
It is the source and the substance of all things.
Love and peace, truth and bliss, consciousness and wisdom,  all are contained in it.
Infinite, invisible, omnipotent, imperishable, perfect, without beginning or end, the Self is a mystery beyond concept or thought.
Every living creature lives by the grace of the Self alone.
If you would make your life worthwhile, seek the truth of the Self in the depths of your heart.
More subtle than a gossamer web, the Self cannot be seen or touched or known: you can only BE it.
When you have become still and silent, have truly gone beyond all attachments and desires, surrendered yourself totally with great love and devotion, then, and only then, the glory of the Self is revealed.
Like a river merging with the infinite ocean, you merge forever in that joy.

At last, your life becomes truly blest.

The Pearl Diver

“ I spend all my time trying to persuade you, young and old, to make your first and  chief concern for the highest welfare of your inner selves.” Socrates
“So long as a man is a stranger to his own divine soul, so long he has not even begun to live. All that he does is exist.” Paul Brunton

This life is a precious gift.
Every human being is born with a spiritual treasure: the integral divinity at the core of being.
Discovering this God-spark inside oneself, at the very centre of one’s own being, is the key to the kingdom of heaven.
This is the source: omnipotent, infinite, eternal, blissful peace.
This is the underlying substance of all that exists.
As a babe, this divinity shines clear and luminous- the passage of time veils it with thought and emotion; thus man loses his most valuable resource.
Therefore, re-discovering this pearl beyond all price is the primary purpose of your very existence!
Returning to your inner divine core is the surest way to find true meaning and joy in your daily life.
It is the ONLY way to experience utter satisfaction and perfect contentment, lasting happiness and peace.
Life is short, death is certain, the blind pursuit of wealth and possessions will rob you of your precious time.
Why chose uncertainty and fear and despair instead of immortal, radiant bliss?
Seek the Real now: dive deep into your own being!
From that perfect Centre, all that you see will be sacred.

Bamboo Shadows

“The bamboo shadows are sweeping the stairs
But no dust is stirred.
The moonlight penetrates the depths of the pool
But no trace is left in the water .” Zen saying.

The greatest truths are the most subtle.
God’s grace is lighter than the touch of a butterfly wing.
To experience the Divine, be in harmony with its quiet song.
Be still and silent to hear the whisper of perfection in the Heart.
Between deep sleep and waking there is a brief moment:
pure awareness, Being without name or form.
Seize this moment! Taste it. Return to it again and again.
Stop thinking! Stop seeking!
Go straight to the root. Return to the Source.
When mind becomes still and sinks into the depths of silence,
That ocean of Self is endless, blissful peace.

You and me

"Sometimes it is our suffering that mysteriously delivers us to the holiness within ourselves. Having tasted that which is most bitter, we often taste that which is most sweet. Our hearts having been broken, they then can break open. The tiny light of hope that we glimpse in the midst of our suffering can become a light so bright  that the immensity of its power seems second only to the depth of its tenderness. Having entered the regions of our personal hopelessness, we find at last where true hope lies and come to understand more clearly who we are and why we are on the earth.”  Marianne Williamson

I am so tired, dear Lord of Love.
I have fallen into the abyss a million times.
I have died a million deaths.
My heart has been shattered into a million fragments.
Driven by the winds of inexorable desires and unspeakable fears,
I have fled from You in pain.
I have wept a million tears.
The ocean of my suffering has lapped at the edge of your Feet, O Lord, again and again and again.
This time, please do not let me be so stupid, so befuddled , so blind.
Do not abandon me to my unknowing, O Lord of Light, burn all the darkness away!
O sweet Lord, turn your benevolent gaze upon me, be kind!
Let me turn inside-out and seek the source that is You.
Let me awaken , once and forever, from the nightmare of ego-mind.
Reach down and take me by the hand and lift me into your embrace.
Absorb me into the perfect wholeness of your compassionate Grace!
Allow me to be.
Let the eyes of my soul feast upon the radiance of your invisible face!
At last, let me truly see.
What kind of game is this, O Lord? Is this the answer?
When I let go of this " I" that I have been clinging to, there is no more suffering!
You are me!
